The conservative Club for Growth announced on Tuesday its support for Republican Dave Schweikert... the endorsement came on the same day that Schweikert received other good news. An internal poll found Schweikert leading Mitchell by 8 points, 46 percent to 38 percent.

In the state's 5th district, Mitchell trailed his 2008 opponent Dave Schweikert 50 percent to 44 percent.

Harry Mitchell has his work cut out for him in his bid for re-election in a heated re-match in Arizona’s Fifth Congressional District. Mitchell will face off, once again, with his 2008 Republican challenger David Schweikert. Mitchell was first elected in 2006 and his re-election can in large part be attributed to the Obama fever that was sweeping the nation. Now, however, that fever has long been broken, and it’s going to take more than an “era of good feelings” for Mitchell to stay employed as Schweikert’s campaign gains momentum.

Dozens of supporters crowded into Republican candidate David Schweikert’s campaign headquarters Tuesday, breaking out in cheers as preliminary election numbers were read aloud for Arizona’s 5th Congressional District.

As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, he is well ahead of Susan Bitter Smith and Jim Ward in a U.S. House District that includes Scottsdale, Tempe and Fountain Hills.

The former Maricopa County treasurer received about 22,000 votes, while his closest competitors, Jim Ward and Susan Bitter Smith each had about 14,000 votes.
